COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Davis County Recovery Day Recap

Written by Michelle Harris, Recovery Day Chairperson

recoveryDavis County Recovery Day was held September 6, 2014 at Heritage Park in Kaysville, Utah – from noon until 4pm. The event was a countywide celebration for those working hard at their personal recovery, families, friends, allies and organizations that support prevention and recovery from alcohol and drug addiction.

A beautiful community collaboration of organizations and volunteers who contributed to planning activities, music and fun that was free to the public. We had a great turnout and community response. We served over 500 free meals that consisted of hot dogs, chips, and waters. In addition were snowies, cotton candy, and popcorn for the little ones. The children had two bouncy houses, Disney characters – Princess Bell, Elsa & Anna from the Frozen movie, face painting, and fun building binoculars with Lowe’s.

Davis County Recovery DayWe had a wonderful DJ, a live performer, hula hoop & limbo contests with audience participation, as well as a flash Zumba and recovering person share her story with us. We raffled hundreds of items throughout the event, with lots of great prizes donated by local businesses. Various educational booths and vendors available to inform the community. It was an awesome event – celebrating & educating for recovery in our community! With a special thanks to Davis Behavioral Health (Brandon Hatch), USARA (Mary Jo McMillen), Cold Creek (Jared Davis) and Discovery House (Barbara Willobee), the entire committee for hanging tough with me – among many others who made this all possible.
