evidence-based practices with empathy

Utah Recovers with research-backed services. USARA prioritizes a connection-based approach to recovery from substance use disorders, while also leveraging models with proven effectiveness. Our services are non-clinical supports that differ from traditional treatment. We emphasize fidelity, proper training, and supervision to ensure these models are delivered appropriately.

Peer Recovery Support Services

Holistic One-on-One Coaching

A large body of peer-reviewed literature on Peer Recovery Support Services (PRSS) demonstrates the successful outcomes of peer coaching, including improved relationships, increased satisfaction with treatment, reduced rates of recurrence, and increased retention. A selection of this research can be found through SAMHSA, and the Faces and Voices of Recovery resource library.

The PRSS model has been evaluated and implemented in various settings, and we offer short and long-term coaching in the following settings:

  • USARA’s statewide recovery community centers
  • Drug courts and other criminal justice settings
  • Hospital emergency departments
  • Homeless shelters
  • Behavioral health, primary care settings and healthcare clinics

Accreditation

USARA offers PRSS with the recognition and support of the Council on Accreditation of Peer Recovery Support Services (CAPRSS), organized by the leading national organization Faces and Voices of Recovery.

Family Support Services

A Lifeline for Loved Ones

USARA’s family support services are based on the evidence-based model Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), originally developed by Dr. Robert Meyers. Demonstrated outcomes include reduction to time of treatment entry.

CRAFT Innovation in Utah

USARA adapted CRAFT to be facilitated in a group setting, supporting families in Utah with skills-based education that aims to improve familial relationships throughout recovery. Partnership with the University of Utah Social Research Institute is helping establish the evidence for additional positive outcomes, including

  • Increased perception of family member well-being
  • Increased perception of the well-being of struggling family members with Substance Use Disorders
  • Increased perception of knowledge, skills, and confidence
